Magnificat primi toni, Dieterich Buxtehude

Part of St Austin’s Sacred Sounds in a Sacred Space series, this service, in addition to the music listed below for Evensong on 10 October, will be enriched by chant (short respond, psalm antiphon, and office hymn) proper to the feast, as well as organ versets on the hymn by seventeenth-century French composer Jehan Titelouze (used as intended, interspersed with the singing) and a fantasia on the Magnificat by seventeenth-century German composer Dieterich Buxtehude (also in something like its original context) – all enhanced by a beautiful space with lively acoustics and a fine Baroque-style organ. This will be a precious ecumenical opportunity, a beautiful musical event, and a fine way to honor the Evangelist from whose Gospel so many of the great songs of the Church come – all to the glory of God. Please do join us.
